It is an Ipv4 address and is mostly used as a default Ip address for many Adsl and cable modems or routers. The major routers and modems which use 192.168.1.254 as a default Ip include Westell Adsl modems and Cayman/Motorola Netopia internet gateways, Thompson Adsl routers, some Tp-Link routers, Alcatel Adsl modems, 3Com routers, Srw2023 Linksys switches, and Adsl Billion routers.

Following are given answers of some of the prominent questions from the users related to Ip.

What is the common Usage of 192.168.1.254 Ip?




We have explained earlier that it is the hidden Ip for large number of distinct modems and routers. However, you can use this Ip address in your local network also, but before that make sure that network is not related to any other router using the same Ip. Why is 192.168.1.254 a hidden Ip Address?

T1 Router Recommendations

Here's the scenario....all too frequently seen by the way...with a practical honest answer.

You have (1) T1 line for which you will need a T1 router in order to plug it into your ethernet router/vpn/firewall that will then pass into your Lan. You want the router to be able to deal with a 2nd T1 line (or 2-T1s bonded) for future increase (if needed). You also want the router to be easy to "adminstrate".

Now here's the questions you may have.....




1. What are some basic T1 routers that will fit the bill?

2. Are these T1 routers traditionally provided and maintained by the local loop supplier or the firm owner?

3. Are there advantages/disadvantages to managing this router yourself vs letting the carrier do it? Typically, how much maintenance/administration do you need to perform on it?

And here's the talk you well need......

Unless you're doing something well well complicated or unique, your best bet is to allow the internet supplier to supply the router ... That's called "managed" service. Then you have no acquisition cost, you won't pay extra for a dual T1 router on which you might never deploy the 2nd circuit, don't have to go straight through the lease or buy decision, have no maintenance costs or worries, you have no risk of obsolescence, and don't have to schedule the thing (or pay man else to do it). At&T circuits have the managed router selection for only an additional /month or so for a particular T1. Other providers consist of the router for free.

Default Router Ip Addresses

The extensive penetration of the Internet has caused routers to be gift and seen roughly everywhere. Though differing in their fine points, extensive they have the same features. This is first report from two part series seeing at the seemingly easy task of setting up Internet connection to protection Dvr. While this report will focus on general steps complicated in allowable connection forwarding to Cctv Dvr, the part two is all about dynamic Dns hold and workarounds. Before we step into the main subject, I like to clarify very briefly a few key aspects of Internet connection for those of us not familiar with term like Ip address, Ddns, port forwarding or Ip mapping.

Terminology:

Every computer or other network device, in our case Cctv recorder has its own address called Ip address, much like your home address it allows the data to find its way in large world of internet. Ip address has four groups of numbers separated by dots; the whole range is in the middle of 0 and 255. There are two detach networks that we need to take into consideration, Lan for Local Area Network and Wan for Wide Area Network. Lan has its own Ip addresses and handles connection on local network devices (computers or devices settled in your home or office network), if Wan Ip is your home address than Lan Ip would be your apartment number.




Wan Ip is an external address graphic to every user on the Internet. We will clarify rest of the terminology as we go along.

Setup:

The best way to clarify and clarify watch Dvr connection setup is to use an example. In our example, we will setup Dvr model Vdv-074 from Dvrexperts straight through Netopia Router/Modem combo currently used by At&T Dsl victualer with static Ip service, I will also use Linksys Wrt54G Router for Cable Dsl connection. protection Dvr recorder needs to be connected to the Internet straight through Router and Modem, in some cases Router and Modem are all in one devices, for example Netopia Routers.

For standalone Modems please join together the Internet out to Wan port, on your Router. join together Cctv Dvr and computers to ready ports on the Router as well. Your Router will need to be setup now to log in to the Internet assistance victualer and create connection.

Netopia Router users:

Open up browser on your computer and type into the address bar your routers default Ip http://

192.168.1.254. User name and password window should appear; the default user name and password for Netopia Routers are admin for user and serial whole of your Router for the password.

Select Configure followed by Quick start link, type your Internet assistance providers user name (email address) and your Isp password. Click submit and alert icon settled in upper right projection (I know it is strange), ultimately elect save and restart. Your connection should be up in small or so, click home link to see your connection status.

Linksys Router users:

Open up browser on your computer and type into the address bar your routers default Ip [http://192.168.1.1]. User name and password window should appear; the default user name and password for Linksys routers are admin for user and admin for the password.

The home page of the router has Isp settings, type in your email address as a user name and Isp password for the password, elect save or submit. The Router will restart after small or so, log in again and go to status page to see if your connection status is Up.

If all is ok and your connection is Up, we can now jaunt to fun part of the setup process

There is great whole of different protection Digital Video Recorders on the market, so please result your Dvr's by hand for details; I will only furnish the allowable settings. In the Dvr menu, setup static Lan (Internal) Ip for the Dvr, in our example we have 3 computers and Dvr. Each gismo has assigned Lan Ip address as follows:

Computer 1 - 192.168.1.100

Computer 2 - 192.168.1.101

Computer 3 - 192.168.1.102

Dvr - 192.168.1.103

The watch Dvr will now be accessible within our network by typing its assigned internal Ip (192.168.1.103) into browser or connection software. What we need now is to forward the connection from external Ip (Wan) which is accessible from surface of our network to the Lan Ip of the Dvr (192.168.1.103).

Netopia Router users:

Select Configure followed by advanced and ultimately Ip Maps. Ip map table should be empty, click on add and type into Ip Map Entry Name text box the name of your Dvr connection, in our example I just typed in Dvr so I know what this Ip map is for. In Internal Ip address box type in 192.168.1.103, for external Ip address refer to you Isp work sheet and find out what is your Ip. In some cases Isp will furnish more than one static Ip, you can choose one of them.

Click submit and alert icon settled in upper right corner, ultimately elect save and restart.

From now on whatever requesting external Ip will be forwarded to the internal Ip of the Dvr (192.168.1.103), therefore the connection should be established successfully.

Linksys Router users:

When setting up your Dvr for way from the Internet, you will need to configure Port Forwarding on your Linksys Router. This can be accomplished in one of two ways, specific Port Forwarding or the Dmz host. The Dmz host automatically forwards all incoming connection requests to a given Ip address on your local network. Open the Applications & Gaming section of the router and choose Dmz. Dmz is not gather and should only be used with embedded, non-Pc based Cctv recorders.

To expose the Dvr to the Internet, enter the Dvr local Ip address (192.168.1.103) in the Dmz Host Ip address box. In some cases you may just want to forward specific ports to your protection Dvr. If you are running any other device/server that hosts services ready to the internet, you will want to use specific port forwarding instead of the Dmz Host, also if your Dvr is Pc based it is strongly recommended for protection reasons, to only forward ports used by Dvr connection. Open the applications & Gaming section of the router and choose Port Range Forwarding. Type in the name for the connection, beginning port number, ending port whole and internal Ip of the Dvr (192.168.1.103 in our example). Save and exit.

Your connection is now setup properly.

You probably noticed the term static Ip in this article, and are wondering what that is.

Well, static Ip is what the name suggests an Ip that never changes. While there is no problem with internal Ip selection; we can use whatever we want or prefer - the external Ip, ordinarily is dynamic. The static Ip has to be requested from the Isp and is more expensive than dynamic Ip. In our case we do want static Ip so we have address for Cctv Dvr connection that will never change.

Throughout this tutorial I have assumed that the external static Ip is available.

Unfortunately in many areas it is not, or the cost is prohibitive. Don't panic yet, there is at least combine of different ways nearby this problem and I will try to go over each advent in my next report "How to use free dynamic Dns services for Dvr connection."

Have You Had Problems Setting Up A Wireless Router?

A friend contacted me with a networking problem the other day that
I concept I would share with you. Maybe you have experienced it as
well. And you know the definition of feel right?
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!

My friend and his wife had gone wireless. They bought new laptops
with built-in wireless (Wifi) and wanted to begin to roam around
the homeplace untethered by Lan cables while connected to the Internet.

So in increasing to the laptops they came home with a LinkSys wireless
router to supply the indispensable way point for the laptops.
The guy at the computer store said it would work like a charm.
All they had to do was plug in the wireless router and go.
After rebooting, powering off and on, and calling the computer store
all with no success, they figured they had nothing to lose by calling me.
I haven't figured out whether I'm flattered or insulted.




Nonetheless, I was able to help because I had feel (see definition above).

Let's start with a slight background. As you probably know, to send and receive information
on the Internet, your computer has to have an Internet Protocol (Ip) address.
This Ip address is a part of the Internet's Transmission control Protocol (Tcp).
These addresses, which uniquely identify devices on the Internet,
are given out in blocks to Internet service Providers (Isps)
by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (Iana).
Your Isp then redistributes these addresses to its customers. You, in other words!
I haven't heard of any Isp that gives out complicated Ip addresses per account.
Usually if you have one digital subscriber line (Dsl) or one cable-Tv Internet association you get
one Ip address. And even then, the Ip is often not enduringly assigned to you.
The Isp will let you use it while you're online and then give it to someone
else when you disconnect (i.e. Turn off your Dsl or cable modem). This process
is called Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (Dhcp). Remember this Dhcp.
It will show up later!

So how is it that at your home you've been able to have more than one computer
with only one Ip address?

Well two things come into play.
First the Iana has reserved the
following three blocks of the Ip address space for inexpressive internets:


10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 (10/8 prefix)
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 (172.16/12 prefix)
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 (192.168/16 prefix)

Secondly there's someone else protocol called Network Address Translation (Nat) involved.
The inexpressive Ip address mentioned can be used freely and the Internet system
should ignore any those addresses if they ramble out on the facts superhighway.

But your local router listens for those addresses. And if there are any packets, as they're
sometimes called, with a inexpressive (or internal) Ip address headed out onto the Internet,
your router will substitute its own Ip address that it acquired from your Isp
(this is the Network Address Translation).
When facts returns your router will get it first and keep track of where to
send it back to you via your inexpressive (or internal) Ip address.
Your router is able to do this even if you have complicated computers on your
private (or internal) network.

Now, getting back to our problem. You may have noticed that your wired Pc gets one of
these Nat inexpressive addresses such as 192.168.1.100 when you turn it on. Routers
request a real address from your Isp (many times via Dhcp). And then your
router may give you an inexpressive Ip address via its own Dhcp server. When it gives you
the Ip address it also tells you to send your packets to it first. It becomes
your gateway so that it can translate the internal inexpressive Ip address to the real
Ip address. So the gateway Ip address many (but not all) routers select by default is 192.168.1.1
and especially LinkSys routers.

But here's what happened to my friend. They already had a wired router (a Netopia) that
was getting a real Internet address and using a inexpressive internal gateway Ip address of
192.168.1.1 for the computers on the wired network. When the new LinkSys wireless router
was plugged into the Netopia, it asked for an Ip address via Dhcp. It was give an Ip address of 192.168.1.114
by the Netopia. And then the LinkSys set itself up as gateway Ip address 192.168.1.1 for the wireless
Pcs that connected. Now you might think this would work since there were two detach private
networks in fact. But as it turns out, routers are pretty smart, but apparently not that
smart. The LinkSys wireless router received outbound packets at gateway Ip address 192.168.1.1 but
got mixed up trying to send them onto the Netopia router which also had a gateway
Ip address of 192.168.1.1 that it was using.

The solution? Using the LinkSys browser-based configuration utility I changed the default gateway Ip
address to 192.168.2.1 for the LinkSys.

Now I ignored some Ip addressing issues such as subnets and masks.
